LONDON - ANGLO CELTIC COUNTY CUP CHAMPIONS 2010

Anglo Celtic County Cup Champions 2010  – LONDON ‘A’

Starting the weekend and the confidence was high, the draw had been done and everyone was ready. The first game was against Lancashire ‘B’ we knew this was going to be hard but we managed to get a great result winning 7-2. Next game was a little closer winning against Pembrokeshire 6-3. We were up against Cheshire in the next game and there were some good battles but we ended up on the wrong end of a 6-3 defeat. At this point we knew some of the other teams had put in some really good results and we grinded out an 8-1 win over Yorkshire ‘B’. Going into the last game we knew it was close but we had no idea of the other scores or the standings, every player played their hearts out and got a 7-2 win over Essex ‘B’ which put us in first place in the group by 1 point to Cheshire.

The semi-finals were to be held on Sunday morning everyone turned up to play against a very strong Lancashire ‘A’ side. This time all the games were to be played at the same time. The results started to come in and we had got to 5 before all players had finished that was London ‘A’ in the final with a 5-4 win.

Our opponents in the final were Cheshire after they had beaten Yorkshire ‘A’ 5-4 in a very close game. We knew from the previous round that Cheshire were dangerous as they had dished out our only defeat so far, again all games were played at the same time as the results were coming in thick and fast we were in the position of being 4-3 down with Steve Douglas 2-0 down to John Bowles and Tara Deamer 2-0 up against Jane Stubbs, Tara took her game winning 3-0 and every player and supporter in made their way to Steve’s board as he clawed his way back to 2-2, in a tense final leg with big scores and missed doubles Steve took the game 3-2 to send the London crowd delirious, London ‘A’ had deservedly won the Inaugural Anglo Celtic County Cup.

Steve Douglas won 7 out of 7, Ross Smith won 7 out of 7, Tara Deamer won 7 out of 7, Clare Bywaters won 6 out of 7, Dan Day won 5 out of 7, Chris Stevens won 4 out of 7, Conan Whitehead won 3 out of 7, Lisa Dunford won 1 out of 7 and Steve McHale won 1 out of 7.

London also entered a 'B' Team into the competition, made up of Jason Wiles, John Nelson, Rob Edwards, Dave Harris, Phil Smith, Johnny Stefano, Tammy MacKenzie, Sue Holt, Ged Carney and Tina Hamilton, Drawn in a very tough group, they lost all five games going down 8-1 to Yorkshire ‘A’, 5-4 to Merseyside, 6-3 to Devon, 6-3 to Lancashire ‘A’ and 7-2 to Essex ‘A’

Some of the games were closer than the scores suggest with many games going 3-2 in favour of the opponents, Rob Edwards was superb winning all five of his games, defeating the like of Keith Flint 3-1, Joe Murnan 3-2 and Alan Collins 3-0, Jason Wiles had a fantastic game against an in form Dean Winstanley of Yorkshire, losing out 3-2, but speedy had darts to win the game, after a slow start John Nelson kicked in with two fine wins 3-1 against The Anglo Celtic Cup singles champion Dave Place of Lancashire and a 3-2 win against Essex’s Eddie Gosling in a very tough, high scoring game. Overall Rob Edwards won 5 out of 5, John Nelson won 2 out of 5, as did Sue Holt, Jason Wiles won 1 out of 5 and so did Ged Carney, Tammy Mackenzie won 2 out of the 4 games she played. Johnny Stefano, Phil Smith and Dave Harris failed to record a victory in all 5 games they played and Tina Hamilton lost the only game she participated in.

On the whole this was a very successful weekend away for the London County squad, with loads more players not making the journey London put a marker down against some of the top Counties in the BICC, In the Sunday Anglo Celtic Cup Singles Competitions, Steve Douglas made it to the Semi-Finals, losing narrowly 5-4 to the eventual Champion Dave Place of Lancashire, Ged Carney also lost in the Semi-Finals to Lancashire player and eventual Champion Lisa Ashton by the score of 4-0, Ged did beat Dee Bateman 3-1 in the Quarter Finals to send the watching London hordes into raptures.
